Shark Tank SOR Soap Update from Season 15

The creators of SOR Soap shared their idea on episode 20 of ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ season 15. They were hoping one of the sharks would invest in their company to help them grow and succeed. Dan and David, the co-founders, presented their unique business idea on the show. They asked for $100,000 in exchange for 10% equity, valuing the company at $1 million

David and Dr. Dan created SOR Soap to help with sore muscles. Their soap is all-natural and works like a muscle-scraping tool used by physical therapists. SOR Soap contains relaxing lavender and chamomile, plus menthol for a cooling feel. Using it can improve your muscle and soft tissue health.

It also smells good and helps you feel refreshed or workout. To use SOR Soap, rub the concave side of the soap along your muscle 20-30 times at a 15-degree angle.

When the sharks tried SOR Soap, they liked it. Lori said it felt like a massage, and Robert thought it was cool. They gave positive feedback about the product. When Barbara asked about the therapy, Dan explained the science behind it, mentioning fibroblast proliferation. Kevin asked about the sample, and Dan said it was a polycarbonate tool for soothing massages.

Further, Barbara asked about their backgrounds. Dr. Dan shared that he has been an athlete all his life. He earned a biology degree and then a doctorate in physical therapy before opening his practice. Also, David said that firstly, he was a patient of Dr Dan, and then he became his friend, and he eventually became his business partner.

Lori asked about their costs and sales. The founder said that they have made $125,000 in lifetime sales. This quarter alone, they sold 70,000 units, showing strong growth. Also, They aim to sell over 250,000 units this year. Their products are sold at physical therapy centers and some boutique gyms. It’s impressive that they have achieved this in just two years.

Also, they sell two bars with a holder for $23.00. It costs them $8.52 to make. Further, they sell wholesale to physical therapy offices and gyms for $15 to $17.

Kevin O’Leary was the first to drop out because he was already in the soap business with Blueland. Barbara Corcoran thought there were too many competitors in the soap market and found the product hard to sell, so she was also out. Robert Herjavec said he looked for bigger products as an investor, so he decided not to invest. But, he said he would be with their product as a customer.

Lori Greiner liked the product, but more investment was needed. So, she also chose not to invest. Fortunately, Mark finally recognized the potential and extended an offer for the product.

He offered $100,000 for 20% equity. Dr. Dan countered with $100,000 for 15% equity and free physical therapy consults. Mark said he already has a team for that and stayed firm at 20%.

Finally, the co-founders discussed briefly and accepted Mark’s offer before he could change his mind, valuing the company at $500K.

SOR Soap Founders

SOR Soap Founders David Restiano and Dr. Dan Staats

David Restiano and Dan Staats are the founders of SOR Soap, a company that started in 2019. David Restiano and Dan Staats both come from New Jersey. David, a Marist College graduate, has a background in athletics and graphic design. In the early 2000s, he contributed to the development of a nightlife app.

Also, David coached soccer at St. Rose High School in Belmar and played in adult leagues. To manage his increasing aches, he began physical therapy with Dr. Dan Staats. During the pandemic, he turned to running for fitness but injured his hip.  Also, when he returned to Dan for help, Dan used a metal tool to scrape David’s skin, relieving muscle stiffness.

In 2019, David realized that a firm soap might offer a similar benefit while bathing. He designed a soap with a handle to make it easier to hold, aiming to mimic the soft tissue scraping experience. David then approached Dan with his idea, asking if he would be interested in developing it together.

Dan, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, runs his clinic and teaches at universities, specializing in Orthopaedics Musculoskeletal dysfunction. He took charge of the soap’s development with David.

Once they found a production facility, Dan and David tested SOR Soap with physical therapists and athletes, receiving positive feedback. Also, David Restiano and Dan Staats’s net worth was $400K as of January 2024.
